Before writing a dissertation you should clearly understand what you write it for. I mean you should have a specific goal that you want to achieve by writing this dissertation. Normally, by writing a dissertation you should want to become a Ph.D.
That is why we want to tell you about Ph.D.
Doctor of Philosophy (Latin Philosophiæ Doctor, Ph.D., PhD) - a degree awarded by some, especially English-speaking, Western countries.
Qualification work for this degree is a doctoral dissertation (Ph.D. Thesis)
History
First this conception appeared in the 12-13 centuries in Britain, France and Italy.
Despite the name, now the degree has no practical relation to philosophy (only historical) and is awarded in almost all scientific fields, for example: PhD in Literature or Doctor of Philosophy in Physics.
This situation is associated with traditions dating back to the medieval universities, a standard structure which typically used the faculties of philosophy, law, theology and medicine. So besides the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, there are a limited number of other doctoral degrees, the same rank; doctors awarded the degree of doctor of medicine, lawyers - the doctor of law, theologians - Doctor of Divinity, and all the rest - Doctor of Philosophy.
The situation in different countries
In some countries, such as the U.S. and Canada, this degree is higher in some other countries (France and Germany) there are higher degrees, to some extent, the Russian equivalent of a doctorate.
At the same time in some Western countries post-graduate education to the same extent as in the Russian Federation, is characterized by two stages, each requiring a separate defense of the dissertation. For example, in Brazil, Canada the first post-graduate level - is the title of Master (MA) Science (Master of Science, M.Sc.), whereas the second stage - the title of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). In this case, that a doctoral degree, which is obtained with the status of doctor of philosophy, is not analogous to the degree of Doctor of Science in the Russian Federation, although it is the second level of postgraduate education. The degree of Doctor of Science in the Russian Federation assumes the solution of major scientific problem or priority studies in the new scientific field and adherence to requirements in the Russian Federation. But in most western countries there are no such problems, only in countries of former Soviet Union.
